Ramesh Chaurasia- Inequality

If we try to trace the aspects and levels of inequalities that exist all around us we would notice that inequalities as a subject matter are deeply ingrained in all societies and communities at slightly different levels. Some societies are marked by racial inequalities, while some are known for gender discrimination widely. Amongst these few categories, there are also some vastly common streams of inequalities like disability and social status.

The world is round- All about commonalities

I remember once I had a conversation with a person at a business conference. The person suffered from a limb ( leg ) disability and used a wheelchair. He had a seat next to me in the conference hall, when I helped him move from his wheelchair and take the chair to attend the meet. While having a conversation with him, I got to know that he worked as a data analyst in a Multinational Corporation and leads his department. I was pretty impressed to hear about his experience and achievements in his line of work. However, he told me that no matter how much you proliferate in your field of career, no matter how much you see people respecting you and talking all sweet to you in front of you but as soon as you turn your back they’ll laugh at you and call you by names associated with your disability. Bullying is unfortunately not limited to just schools or colleges but continues throughout life if you suffer from something that’s going to stick with you for your whole life.

His words pushed me to think how typical and rigid we can be to make fun of someone for something he is not even responsible for while we sideline everything the person achieves in life with his hard work and dedication. There are several such anecdotes that I can share which clearly portray how restricted our mindsets are to look and define things, not in human control, and completely neglect things achieved with great hard work and dedication. Sadly, this is the way of life all over the world. However, the important part is that it can be changed if we really want it to.

All things bright and positive

According to my belief, all we need is a change of mindset to transform the current scenario in this aspect. Although changing mindsets is a tedious task to work on, it’s the only way out of the disheartening circumstances we face today. Another common inequality experienced by people all around us is based on social status and financial status one holds. There is still a wide gap between the rich and the poor that needs to be filled. And this can only be done by instilling a positive and non-discriminatory approach. Working on introducing programs that involve people of almost all social and financial statuses to work together as a team will help in bridging the gap that exists.

To wrap up

We, as the global citizens of the world, need to pay close attention to devise a plan in order to change the mindset of the current as well as the coming generations.
