Ramesh Chaurasia-Decent Work & Economic Growth

These words, which were addressed by Guy Ryder, Director-General, International Labour Organization explain how crucial the role of decent, stable, and regular work is, in defining the dignity and respect of humans. At this point, I would like to take you back to the initial days when the Covid-19 pandemic began and cases started rising in our country. As a precaution against rising infection, the government decided to impose a country-wide lockdown, putting a halt to all the activities related to social, economic, cultural, religious, and political spheres. As a result, office places, businesses, service providers, transporters, etc. suffered harshly due to their work facing great losses in front of their eyes while they were all helpless to change anything for their good again. Just imagine waking up almost every morning without a stable job to go to or decent work to hustle for. Feelings of disappointment and uncertainty begin to cloud up over the head of someone in such a situation.

The significance of decent work

From the very beginning of our lives, our parents strive hard to give us the best of education, encourage us to study with full dedication, and want us to follow our dreams passionately even if it requires them to put their lives at stake for once. Why do you think they are so stuck up on the fact of providing us the best and wanting us to make full use of every facility given to us? The answer is simple. The ultimate goal is to create a successful career stream and have stable work to live life to the fullest.

Getting a high-profile job at a well-known multinational company with a decent salary package is considered to be a great achievement. Starting a business and becoming a successful entrepreneur is known to be a true sign of amazing career settlement for an individual. Having decent and regular work not only enhances the economic status of the person but also adds up to his/her wonderful lifestyle.

It inculcates a strong sense of:

Individuality

Pride

Achievement

Dignity

Also, the availability of proper jobs not only leads to individual progress in an economic aspect but also paves a path towards collective and national economic growth.

Decent jobs paving the way towards economic growth

Goal 8 of the list consisting of 17 sustainable development goals put forward by The United Nations Organisation aims at focusing on:

Job creation

Full employment with equal pay

Youth employment and training

Protecting labor rights

Enhancing work environments

Developing further employment strategies

Contributing towards social benefits like curbing poverty and issues related to hunger

Collectively working on the aforementioned targets will result in experiencing a jump in the economies of all nations. In my opinion, the truth is that no matter how much we focus on the development of our own countries and nations individually, but, the actual betterment would show its real essence only when done collectively, as a whole. As people will start working stably, they will begin earning regularly and therefore, they’ll be able to invest more in various activities and projects. Leading to organic growth in the finance and investment sector.

To sum up

In conclusion, I would like to share that the journey towards betterment and advancement is not going to be easy if we try to complete it alone or individually. Unity and collective efforts make it all happen.
